Artist Similar - Annotation

The packaging for Lana Del Rey's "Born To Die" is a paper fold digipak, it contains a disc and lyrics booklet. The artwork of the albums house colour is a off-white colour scheme. The front image features a mid shot of Del Rey with her name and the album title. The back cover is minimal, only featuring the album track list. The disc design follows the minimalistic style with a white print and 3 roses on the edge of the disc which also fits the romantic themes of the album. The booklet features the lyrics of the album printed on an off white background with ink splatters in gold and blood splatters. This album is similar to mine as I kept an minimal style.

Editing Music Video

Markers
I used markers on the sound and video to help me lipsync the lyrics, I found a certain part of the song and added a marker to catch a certain word on the video and then done this with the audio as well. I then moved the part of the video or the audio to match up with it and made sure it was very specific.

Transitions

I didn't use transitions for my video, I only used 'fade to black' as this gives it an professional look to the music video and doesn't just cut off.

Effects
I used different effects to change up the simple shots, I used mirroring, different colours e.g. black and white and tiled. This helped the shots look different if I repeated the same one. When the singer was lip-syncing I used these effects as it would make it more interesting to watch. I used black and white for the scenes with the girl and boy to show that it was in the past.

Slow motion and fast motion

I used slow motion and fast motion for some parts in my video, I used the slow motion to show the separation between the girl and boy which continued over the video. I then used fast motion to show the craziness of the girls mind. I had to change the speed either less percent or higher percent to get slow or fast motion.

Some of the strengths I had overall were that it helped change the simple edits and make the video more exciting to watch, I learnt new features but on the other hand it took a long time as I had to learn them before. Adding the features changed the length of the clips which messed up the arrangement which meant it took a long time to render and move back.

Feedback From Class

After we finished our music videos we went around our class and the other A-Level class and looked at each others music videos. This would help us for the evaluation of the video.

The questions included 'Describe the brand image using different adjectives' my responses were 'classy, sophisticated, cool and sassy'. I think this describes my video well as my artist is suppose to be chic and cool and also a side that is fun as well.
The second question was 'what convections of the form/genre can you clearly see' the response was 'ballet dancing, lip syncing and close ups' I was happy with this response as the lip syncing and close ups were what I learnt was most important for a music video to succeed.
The third question was 'what is your favourite shot' the response was 'in the mirror, ballet shots, end scene, emotional bath scene' I felt as though these were some of my favourite shots as well as I felt they worked well with the song and showed the genre of the music best.
The forth question was 'what is the target audience' the response was 'teenage girls 15-18, people with boy trouble experience' this was my target audience for my artist and maybe young adults too as the music and style of the video matched the young age.
The last question was 'what do you think could be adapted/added in order to improve the overall impact of the music video' the responses were 'sync the first words better' which I quickly improved, 'would have been better if ballet dancing was shot in another location' and 'lighting a bit dull at times' these improvements are very similar to what I felt with my music video as after filming I realised that some of the lighting wasn't great but I had little time to change it.

Word Cloud

I feel that these words describe my character best, in my video it represents her as in a bubbly side when she dances but also an emotional side when she is upset.

Why Have A Music Video?

Music videos are a popular form of entertainment it also helps to visualise songs, giving the artist or band an identity and a chance to provide different interpretations.

Why do we have music videos?
  • To entertain
  • To make songs more commercial (providing air time on TV)
  • To advertise (product placement)
  • To promote the artist
  • To give the song a visual platform
  • Creates, adapts or feeds into a 'star image'
  • To familiarise the artist with the audience
  • To be iconic
  • To win awards and be recognised for creativity

Justify Your Idea

For my original idea I wanted my video to be based on a love story and the story follow a man and a woman but I thought this idea was too cliche and wanted to change it up a bit, as the song hinted in an idea of a man and a woman in love/breaking up I still chose to add this in but I based it on the girls emotions more than following the love story.
Following the girls emotion gave my video more depth and could help it relate to the target audience better.

Digipack Sketch

I drew a sketch of how I wanted my digipack to look, I wanted a simple front cover with a pink background along with the artists name and album name clearly written. I wanted the whole album to be pink and have a simple look to it. I wanted to lay the song titles out clearly and the CD to have the artist name and album so that if the album was lost it was still clear who's album it was and it would be easy to remember the name.
