Shot Sheet

I created this shot sheet before I went and filmed to help me know what kind of shots that I wanted, although when creating a music video is hard to identically complete I used most of these shots but there was many that I changed on the day.

StoryBoard

My storyboard turned out to be quite different to my actual music video, the storyboard included a main part of a boy which I changed to just a simple version of the boy creating the story line rather than being part of it. I added many more interesting scenes for example the ballet and the bath scenes which I felt had more story to them.

Booking Equipment

I booked my equipment on our school blog for the 24th of October. I booked out a camera and a tripod to be able to start my filming. I took the camera out for the half term to enable a lot of time to film.

Location

I chose to use a park near to my house, as it would be convent and helpful. I used the park to do some shots in the sun which would suit the happiness of the video which I would then shoot dark scenes in another location. The park had lots of big trees which could help my character in the acting of the video, I used this park as it is a open public park which means it was easy to access without any trouble or a cost. I used my house for the shots of the lip syncing and for the dancing.

Lyrics

Hanging

The doctor told me to wait
But I'm siting here drowning mistakes
And i can find any piece of mind unless its in the form of forgetting
The truth tries to find me i don't need reminding so i won't let it.

I'm hanging thinking about you, hanging
But the trick doesn't work I'm hanging
Thinking about youuuuuu.

My teacher told me to quit
The pain hurts and I like to numb it
And i can't find any piece of mind unless its in the form of forgetting
The truth tries to find me i don't need reminding so I won't let it

I'm hanging thinking about you, hanging
But the trick doesn't work I'm hanging
Thinking about youuuuuu.

And it hurts the drop that cloud the wall in my head
And I hurt that the poison fades away
The words that you say

I'm hanging thinking about you, hanging
But the trick doesn't work I'm hanging
Thinking about youuuuuu.

Filming Dates

We talked in our class about the deadlines we must give ourselfs, it was suggested that we should film in the half term of 24th October - 3rd November which gives us enough time to film and edit by our deadline of the rough copy which is the Monday 10th Nov.

I decided to film in the half term on the 28th of October to ensure I would have time for refilming. This was also a great time for my actor to do as well as she had free time on her hand. I texted her to ensure it was okay for the time I have scheduled.

I texted the girl that was going to take part in my music video to see if that date was available.

Ideas

Artist - Sinead Harnett

Sinead Harrnett

When thinking about my artist I was very lucky that my Brother in Law is a music producer who knows many artists. I had two options for my music video as all the other music he has done has been released, I had 2 songs that didn't have a copyright from a big record label. I thought very closely about the two options:

My first option was a rap song which is talking about women, I thought this would be effective as I wanted to use a girl to rap it to show the thought of men through women but had to think closely about the marketing around the song and how I would be able to show the woman's point of view well in the music video.

My second option was a pop song by Sinead Harnett who has sang for Rudimental and Discloser and is an up and rising singer. My Brother in Law directed a song with her and with his permission I thought this would be best to use. To my luck I really liked Sinead Harnett in other songs she has made and she is a great singer - unfortunately as an upcoming artist she is very busy and has many people to get through too talk to her so I thought it would be best to use someone I know in the video so I could have a flexible filming schedule.

Director X - Auteur Theory

Auteur theory, theory of filmmaking in which the director is viewed as the major creative force in a motion picture. The auteur theory, which was derived largely from Astruc’s elucidation of the concept of caméra-stylo (“camera-pen”), holds that the director, who oversees all audio and visual elements of the motion picture, is more to be considered the “author” of the movie than is the writer of the screenplay. Such important visual elements as camera placement, blocking, lighting, and scene length, rather than plot line, convey the message of the film.

Director X

Director X has been noted to make high budget, visually distinctive music video for popular songs and artists. Director X has been making music videos since 1998. He has also made commercials. He has won many awards for his work.

After watching videos from artists like Iggy Azalea, Kanye West, Drake and Nicki Minaj - I realised that his videos have a secure theme which enables a story line throughout the video. Director X said although music videos don't normally need to tell a story but he enjoys telling a story as it brings a topic and mood. He believes the stories should be intelligent, detailed and well structured. I also noticed that he has a key theme that the shot will fade in and out like a letter box in the opening and ending of each video. He is also very into art direction, lighting, wardrobe, pre/post production. After researching all his music videos I noticed that he specifically directs videos for R&B artists. He also shows his name in many music videos which shows that he is a very famous director and that he also has a good image as artists are happy to add him in when usually directors don't get much credit or recognition.

Work of Director X

When watching a recent video 'Fancy' by Iggy Azalea, I noticed many of Director X's iconic themes in it. The first thing I spotted was the first shot opened like a letter box which he always adds in. I straight away spotted the story line which was the film 'Clueless' being retold. Director X always includes a story line in his music video's which could hint that he wants to be film director. The whole scene is perfectly arranged with the correct mise-en-scene which has been carefully thought about in every scene. The costume is also a big part of this video as they are very similar or identical to the original film which is vital to have to make the video look professional. There was many close ups of the artist which would come from the record label and is good for the audience as they feel relatable. The lip syncing used is a must in a music video as the audience wants to see the artist singing there favourite song.

Hit Me Baby One More Time

To help us understand the many shots and editing for a short video, we completed a task to copy the hit me baby one more time video. We chose the first 30 seconds to complete. When starting the task we wrote a shot sheet so we could plan the video. To compete the task successfuly we completed a shot sheet to list each shot to enable us to know how many shots are needed, what angles are used and what is in the shots. This helped us with filming.  (add sheet)

After completing the task I learnt that there was many different shots that are used and how quickly the shots change to keep the attention. The video should have fast pace editing to keep the audience entertained. A video should include lip singing to make the audience understand the song and relate to the artist singing and also some dance moves could be added. A range of shots need to be included as well.

The close ups are important as they went in time with the beat so using a close up enabled me to show this and focus specifically on it.

I made sure I included a range of different angles in the music video which included high angles, low angles, mid shots and long shots as it is vital to include a range to get a feel of the location and characters.

I made a marking clip on the sound track so I was able to easily match up the right bit of the song with the lip-syncing so that it was in time with the track. This meant that the video looked professional.

Types of Music Videos

Performance Based Video

A performance based is where the artist/band are performing the song just to the camera. I used Rihanna's - Where are you now video to explain this, in the video Rihanna dances and performs to the camera and there isn't much story line behind it, there are some shots where it changes to a story line but the majority of the video is performanced based. There is different locations to where the video is performed which keeps the video interesting.

Narrative Based Video

A A narrative based video is where the video is telling a story to the audience throughout, the story is usually about the lyrics they are singing about to help get a feel of the storyline. In Beyonce's If I was a boy music video she sings about if she was a boy in the relationship, through out the video she does things a man would do, this helps us understand the emotion in the video as we can see it happening.

Concept Based Video

A concept based video is when the video is based about an idea but hasn't got much to do about the lyrics, these could vary to many different ideas. Nicki Minaj's Superbass video doesn't focus on the lyrics at all, there is a lot of dancing and random storylines.

Analysis Of Music Videos

Conventions Of A Music Video

Conventions of a music video

Camera Shots:

Music videos need to include a variety of shots which include long shots, close ups and mid shots. This is to create an atmosphere and emphasis on the artists, location and emotions. Close ups are used to reflect the words of the song as well as emotions

Camera Movements:

The movement of the camera is used to follow the artist/band. They use tilts, pans, tracking and cane shots which helps view the locations that are used.

Mise-en-Scene:

Artists will normally use a variety of props in the music video, this could include small hand held objects to objects on the set. In the video 'Pills and Potions' by Nicki Minaj' she uses lots of different props e.g. bunny ears and pills to relate to the object of the song. They also use different outfits to represent the mood of the song. Lighting is a key convention as it can be used to represent the mood of the video. For example in 'Pills and Potions' the lighting is very bright and colourful which shows that it is a upbeat song.

Editing:

Jump cuts are frequently used because it allows a sudden change from one scene to another which also allows the video to jump back and forth to make sure it continues to be interesting  Transitions are used like fade and dissolve as they create different effects from cut to cut.

Music:

The music would be the song that has been released. Although in some videos they add extra instrumentals or sounds/dialogue to match the video. The video should have lip sinking to make sure it brings a feel and connection between the artist and audience.

Storyboard

Story Board

We created a story board to help us with planning our shots, we first drew out the shots we thought we would shot and then took still images pictures of the images using a still image camera and uploaded it onto final cut express. This gave us experience with final cut before we started our film. We added the pictures into the right order and worked out how long the shot would stay on screen for. We added our titles onto the storyboard, which helped me pick out where I wanted them to be shown, I experimented with this before finalizing my decision. I thought this was good to do as it helped me understand how long the screen should be on screen for and it helped me experiment with my shots to make it look the best I could.

Editing

After finishing the filming, we uploaded the clips onto Final Cut Pro on the Mac's we have at our school. I went through all the shots and picked out the best ones of each scene as I took double shots to make sure I had the best shots. After picking the right shots I then had to put them onto the timeline of the film. I then put the music on by going on a website called audionetwork which was a non copyright website. Then edited the shots by adding effects.

Question 7

Question 6

Question 5

Question 4

What would be the audience for your media product?

When planning my film a big process is who our main target audience, I thought about this for a while. My film could have a wide range of audience as it relates to most people. I wanted a specific target audience so I aimed it at young adults from 17-30 both men and women but is more focused at women. I feel like my film addresses these target demographics:

Women - The film follows a young girl as the main character. Having a woman as a main character is quite rare in films so this will encourage people to watch and be interested in the film.

Men - The film involves a young male which would attract them to watch this film and are an audience who are keen to watch thrillers.

Young Adults - The film follows the story of two teenagers/young people which would be a main reason as to why they would be interested in watching this film as they can relate to them.

Below is a mood board of my specific target audience, I wanted to interview my friend, Chloe, she goes to University and is 19 years old. This helped me to get an idea of what interests she has as it would help with the advertising. I wanted to gather information to decide whether she would be the specific target audience.

Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

For my film opening I picked Columbia pictures as my distributor. Columbia pictures is an American film production and distribution studio. it is one of the leading film studios in the world. The studio was founded in 1918 by brothers Jack and Harry Cohn and Joe Brandt, they released its first feature film in August 1922. Since 1989 Sony Pictures has taken it over as the owners.

I picked Columbia pictures as it has been a well established company and that it is trusted. Most viewers know off Columbia pictures which makes it a well known company. I have seen Columbia Pictures on many films so as the film maker myself it was one of the first company's that came into my head to use, I also am a fan of many Columbia Pictures so it gave me even more reason as to why I wanted to pick it, after i researched it more I thought this would be good to use even more with the reasons below.

Columbia pictures has a wide range of genre types. The main types of genre would be comedy and thriller. Thriller is my genre which matches my film exactly. A film that attracted me to Columbia Pictures was 'the girl with the dragon tattoo' which is a main film i focused on for my research. This shows that they might be interested in doing a similar film which would be a great way to market my film. They also have done a range of horror films which could potentially boost up reasons as too why they would fund my film.

Question 2

Question 1

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I done my directors commentary on this topic so I didn't show any evidence as I was talking over my film which had all the evidence being shown.

Focus Group

Focus Group

I created a focus group for a group of people who I showed my film opening too, a focus group is a group of people who take part it a discussion about a product to give feedback.

The advantages of a focus group are:

- You are able to easily measure customer reaction
- The group are able to express there ideas and have a free discussion as there is no time limit.
- You can get views of a range of audiences and get feedback

The disadvantages of a focus group are:

- The group might not want to give great detail
- It is a small sample

These are the questions I asked my focus group, I asked 6 people the 1-6 on each question will be the different answers, the group varied from ages of 17-30 and was a range of men and female:

What target audience do you believe my film is aimed at?

1. Older teenagers 15+

2. 24 - Yes, I enjoy watching thriller films
3. 29 - Having teenagers as the main characters doesn't appeal to my age
4. 45 - I feel like this film is in a younger era than I am
5. 15 - I think I am a good target audience for the film as long as its not too scary
6. 20 - Yes, i feel this film would suit my categorize

How do you feel about a girl being the lead in the film? Does she suit the role?

3. Yes, she took on the role very well and is believable, she fitted the role
4. Yes a girl as a lead is good, although i hope the boy is in the film too
5. I would like the boy to be the lead as they could act a different way to women

1. No, as it was only the opening scene
2. No, this was suppose to build up suspense so it can carry on
